The FSP and its added value

The study of properties, of the performance and of the complexity of numbertheoretic algorithms is per se a classical and fascinating topic in pure mathematics. In addition, number-theoretic algorithms have recently become of growing importance in various branches of applied mathematics, as for example in cryptology, simulation, high-dimension numerical  integration, and many more. The investigation of number-theoretic algorithms has a long tradition within the Austrian mathematical community. This "Forschungsschwerpunkt (FSP)" should combine the Austrian research groups working on number-theoretic algorithms and their applications.

For many years the members of this FSP "Number Theoretic Algorithms and their Applications" have been working on the generation, the analysis and the application of number-theoretic algorithms with great success. They have dealt with various different aspects of number-theoretic algorithms, thereby covering a broad field reaching from efficient algorithms for the solution of Diophantine equations to the application of number-theoretic methods in image processing and in financial mathematics.

Moreover, for many years most of the members have been organizing and carrying out several research projects supported by the FWF and/or other institutions. In most cases these research projects were dealing with the design and the analysis of number-theoretical algorithms, with the development of methods for the application of these algorithms especially in number-theoretical numerics and in computer sciences, and finally with the concrete application of these methods.

The FSP "Number-theoretic Algorithms and their Applications" should
